Sustainable Feedstock
We encourage producers to use more sustainable sources of feedstock for charcoal briquettes.
What do we mean by sustainable?
As TCP moves forward with programming, we will be incorporating more activities on developing sources of sustainable and renewable energy feedstocks. Many producers of charcoal briquettes rely on chardust, which is a waste product from traditional charcoal production and distribution. While use of chardust cleans up a waste stream, it also contributes to the value chain of an unsustainably produced product.
Sustainable feedstocks may include crops grown specifically for energy harvesting such as bamboo or trees, or waste streams associated with agribusinesses such as milling, distillerys, saw mills and food production. Waste streams from urban waste collection will also be evaluated for harvesting of organic wastes.
